Determining the Percentage of a Ratio Statement


The percentage of the number is a method of showing the number with the denominator 100 as fraction. The percentage of the number is represented by the symbol “%” or “pct”. Percentage shows the relation of the two quantities, the first quantity is associated with the second quantity. So, first quantity should be larger than zero.
Ratio is used to compare the two values which is expressed as a:b. This can also be written in fraction form as a/b.Examples for Determining the Percentage of a Ratio Statement:
Example 1for determining the percentage of a ration statement:
A class contains 100 students.  The ratio of the boys and girls is 4:3. Find the percentage for both boys and girls.
Solution:
The ratio of the boys and girls is 4:3
Therefore, the total proportion of the boys and girls is 4x+3x= 7x
So, 7x = 100 divide both sides by 7
`(7x)/7` = `100/7`
x = 14.29
Number of boys = 4 `xx` 14.29 = 57.16 = 57
Number of girls = 3 `xx` 14.29 = 42.87  = 43
Percentage of boys = Number of boys/total number of students) xx 100
Percentage of boys = `57/100` `xx` 100
Percentage of boys = 57%
Percentage of girls = Number of girls/total number of students) xx 100
Percentage of girls = `43/100 ` `xx` 100
Percentage of girls = 43%
Example 2 for determining the percentage of a ration statement:
A basket contains 150 balls.  The ratio of the red and blue balls is 4:3. Find the percentage for both boys and girls.
Solution:
The ratio of the red and blue balls is 4:3
Therefore, the total proportion of the red and blue balls is 4x+3x= 7x
So, 7x = 150 divide both sides by 7
`(7x)/7` = `150/7`
x = 21.43
Number of red balls = 4 `xx ` 21.43 = 85.72 = 86
Number of blue balls = 3 `xx` 21.43 = 64.29 = 64
Percentage of red balls = `"Number of red balls"/"total number of balls"` `xx` 100
Percentage of red balls = `86/150` `xx ` 100
Percentage of red balls = 57.3%

A basket contains 200 balls.  The ratio of the red and blue balls is 5:4. Find the percentage for both boys and girls.
Solution:
Percentage of the red balls: 55.5%
Percentage of the blue balls: 44.5%
