Visual fractions is one of the ways to learn fractions using images. It is easy for the kids to understand the fraction problems. All the denominator, numerator, common denominator, like and unlike terms are related of fractions. These words can be easily understand when learn visually. The mixed fractions can also be learned using visualization.

Learning visual fractions:

Like fractions – visual fractions:

Like fractions are the fractions which have same denominators.

Like fraction

Unlike fractions – visual fractions:

Unlike fractions are the fractions which have different denominators.

Unlike fraction

In like fractions, the fraction which has high value of numerator is the greatest fraction and the fraction which has high value of denominator is the lowest fraction.

Example problems - Visual fractions:

Find the sum of the following figure.

example 1 - visual fractions

Solution:

Two write it in fraction = total number of shaded portion / total number of portions

The total number of parts in the first figure is 4

The total shaded portion is 4.

The fraction of first diagram is 4 / 4

The fraction of second diagram is 2 /4

The sum of two figures = 4 / 4 + 2 /4

Since the denominators are same we can take it as common denominator

The sum of two figures = 4 + 2 / 4

                                             = 6 / 4.

Find the greatest fraction from the following figure.

example 2 - visual fractions

Solution:

The total number of parts in a first figure is 4

The total number of shaded parts in a first figure is 3

So in fraction the first figure can be written as 3 / 4

The total number of parts in a second figure is 6

The total number of shaded parts is 3

So in fraction the second figure can be written as 3/6.

From the two fractions 3/ 4 and 3 / 6 the second figure has highest denominator so the it givens least value than

3/ 4 .

So the greatest fraction is 3 /4.
